CHEETAH HUNTING Cheetah hunting Is a sport but little known toEuropeans, who prefer, as a rule, to take anactive, rather than a passive, part in the pursuitof game of any description. In India, however,many of the native princes indulge in the pastime,and take a great pride in their cheetahs, orhunting-leopards as they are sometimes called.These animals are carefully trained for theirwork, which consists in running down deer, andare sufficiently tame to be easily handled by theirkeepers, though a stranger would do well to keepat a respectful distance from their formidableteeth and claws. The sport is usually carried onin the cold weather, as later on the grass andjungle become so dense that it is impossible forthe spectator to obtain a good view of the chase.The hunting is not carried out on fixed days ofthe week, and very little preparation Is required,

Cheetah Hunting CHEETAH HUNTING 549 beyond starving the cheetahs for twenty-fourhours or so, in order to make them keen, for,unless hungry, they will not trouble themselvesto chase the deer. The sport usually takes placein jungles specially reserved for the purpose, andthe modus operandi is as follows :—Two cheetahsare driven up on country carts in charge of theirkeepers, who hold them in leash and hooded, so asto prevent their sighting the deer before the timecomes to slip them in pursuit. The spectators,who are generally few in number, as only twocan conveniently go in each cart, and a largenumber of carts would frighten the game, thentake their places just behind the bullock-driverand in close proximity to the cheetahs tail, andthe carts set off, working in and out of the patchesof jungle until a herd of deer is approached suffi-ciently close to give the cheetah a fair chance.The keeper then slips off the hood and lets gothe leash, and the animal bounds off the cart andraces afte
