Dan was only a rough boy but he neverthought of taking his property away from alittle girl, neither did he want to lose thosecherries. He flung himself down on the grassto think the matter over. Marion drew back a little. She was afraidof boys and Dan looked tumbled and dirty.Perhaps he would take her cherries if he got achance. But Dan never moved. Marion ate oneor two, then she began to feel a little selfish. If you were a nice, clean boy, she saidafter awhile, Id give you some cherries. Dan grinned till he showed all his teeth. Am I dirty? he said. Wait a minutethen, and Ill clean up.

One of the cardinal virtues to be instilledinto the minds of children is that of cleanliness.Every primary teacher knows the difficulties inthe way of securing clean hands and faces, andhas much practical experience before attainingthis end with every pupil. Teach the childrenthe moral as well as the physical value of clean-liness until they too realize its desirability andlend their hearty co-operation. She trudged-out to the old cherry tree one morning hopingto find some of the ripe fruit low enough forher to reach and there on the ground was anewspaper nearly full of bright red cherries. He scrubbed his face and hands vigorouslyin the little brook near by, then presented him-self again to the little maid. Will I do now? he
