e partin the civil wars both as a soldier and an envoy, and wasknighted by Charles I. at Oxford. When the royal causewas hopelessly lost, Moray went back to France, and after-wards stood by his new sovereign, Charles II., both on theContinent and in Scotland. His researches in naturalphilosophy and chemistry were not neglected, however, andfrom the Restoration he took his place amongst the mosthonoured men at the English court, carrying on his experi-ments in his pavilion at Whitehall, where he died. Burnetcalls him the wisest and worthiest man of the age, andspeaks of his knowledge of Nature as unsurpassed ; he wasbesides a delightful companion, and even such differentpersons as Evelyn and Pepys unite in praising him. Of the poets, the men of letters, the actors and actresseswho flourished during the seventeenth century, there is muchyet to say, and we shall treat of them in future chapters. Itis time now to turn to the heroes who helped to build upthe bulwarks of Englands greatness.
