Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe pit of Deeside Quarry - geograph.org.uk - 485157.jpg |
English: The pit of Deeside Quarry It was the opening in 1865 of the Llangollen & Corwen Railway (later GWR) which provided the impetus for the development of the Deeside Slab Slate Quarry. Soon, the Deeside Tramway was constructed linking the quarry to a reduction mill at Nant y Pandy SJ1441. This tramway was later extended, upwards to Moel Fferna mine and downwards to the Glyndyfrdwy GWR station.
Deeside was never a major employer. Even at its peak, the workforce never exceeded 40. Nevertheless it remained viable until WWI. Small scale working resumed in the 1920s but came to an abrupt end when, according to one account, two of the quarry's three workers were killed by a rock fall. |
