Since the Catskills consistof nearly horizontal strata, while the other systems aremade of rocks usually complexly folded, the Catskills arereally the least representative mountains in the State; inin fact, as has been said before, they are not properlymountains, but imitation mountains. The Adirondacks.1 — These mountains furnish one ofthe most typical illustrations of a class; they are truemountains in form and structure, long subjected to denu-dation, and reduced to a fraction of their former eleva-tion.
