Iam aware that the point is now almostuniversally taken that in the economyof nature all creatures are required tomaintain a proper balance. In that ex-cellent book on the Hawks and Owlsby Dr. Fisher, it is quite conclusivelyshown that the large majority of ourrapacious birds aie beneficial to manwhile there are but very few aboutwhich there still remains any doubt. However, although the investigationsof scientists have demonstrated thatnearly all birds in the United States aremans assistants, it has not as yet beenproven to observers that many of thetish-eating species are beneticial. Let us take the Brown Pelican as anexample and strike a balance in refer-ence to its vast destructive powers up
