English: The mining town of Newcastle, Washington, ca. 1885
Description
English: Coal was discovered in the Newcastle area in 1863. Newcastle, with its close neighbor Coal Creek, soon became King County's second largest city, after Seattle. Coal was moved by cart and barge to the Seattle waterfront, and most of it was shipped from there to San Francisco. By the 1880s, coal was one of Seattle's major exports.

This photo was taken on the road into Newcastle, sometime around 1885. A wooden sidewalk runs along the side of the road. Newcastle's houses, church, and other buildings spread across the stumpy hillside. The piles of material (center left) are probably mine tailings.
