Summary

[edit]
Description Having finished with the Royal hearse, and feeling pretty creepy about it, (my guide has just broken the news to me, as I was coming out of the shed) it's now time to turn towards the grand main building of Wat Xieng Thong, of which this is a far view. The Brahminy Kite (garuda bird) and the naga (serpent) play a very big role in Buddhism and all Buddhist wats (temple) incorporate elements of these two animals in their design. Here the roof tiles are arranged to match with the scales of the serpent and so are the upturned gables of the building- they are supposed to denote the tail of the serpent. I could not find garuda references on this building yet. (Luang Prabang, Laos/ Lao PDR, April 2014)
