they paid little heed to the prayer. The Hudsonwas frozen so solid that an army with the heaviest artillery might havecrossed it on the ice. One of the writers of the day tells us that the wholeriver from New York Bay to Albany was mere terra firma. And the icewas equally thick and strong in the East River. The Sound at NewHaven was frozen across the whole thirty miles to the Long Island shore,with the exception of about two miles in the middle. No man livinghad ever before seen New York Bay frozen over from the city to StatenIsland ; but now more than two hundred heavily laden two-horse sleighscrossed on the ice in a body at one time, escorted by two hundred horse-men. The British men-of-war in the harbor were hopelessly ice-bound andcould not move. Sir Henry Clinton went south in December to reduce Charleston, leav-ing Knyphausen in command at New York, a rough, taciturn old veteran,the commander-in-chief of the German forces, who had served his prince in WALL STREET IN HISTORY 407

He wasliving at the timein the elegant Mc-Evers dwelling inWall Street, cor-ner of William, which was so metamorphosed through hisuntidy habits during his occupancy, as hardly to berecognized when its proprietors returned. He had many peculiarities,not least among which was the use of his thumb in place of a knife attable to spread butter upon his bread. His exploits, planned and executedduring the winter, degenerated into midnight forays into New Jersey andelsewhere ; his men being able to cross on the ice and return under coverof the darkness.
