Im so glad I came ! The Colonel smiled at the success ofhis plan. In the depths of his satisfac-tion he even had a plate of quail andtoast set down on the hearth for Fritz. 1 This is the nicest pahty I evah wasat, remarked the Little Colonel, asWalker helped her to jam the thirdtime. Her grandfather chuckled. Blackberry jam always makes methink of Tom, he said. Did you everhear what your Uncle Tom did when hewas a little fellow in dresses? She shook her head gravely. Well, the children were all playinghide-and-seek one day. They huntedhigh and they hunted low after every-body else had been caught, but they 95 ...ever saw.

They called and called tillthey were out of breath. Finally shethought of looking in the big darkpantry where she kept her fruit. Therestood Mister Tom. He had opened ajar of blackberry jam, and was justgoing for it with both hands. Thejam was all over his face and hair andlittle gingham apron, and even up hiswrists. He was the funniest sight I The Little Colonel laughed heartilyat his description, and begged for morestories. Before he knew it he was back 96 tTbe Xittle Colonel in the past with his little Tom andElizabeth. Nothing could have entertained thechild more than these scenes he recalledof her mothers childhood. All her old playthings are up in thegarret, he said
