where theFrench and British were attacking. The enemys morale now seemed to^be declining, while ourown men were gaining confidence and experience. On Novem-ber 1 the third and last phase of this battle began. Our advancebecame more rapid. On the 5th the Meuse was crossed. Onthe 6th a division of the First Corps reached the Meuse op-posite Sedan, twenty-five miles from the line of departure,and, as General Pershing says, the strategical goal which wasour highest hope had been gained. On the last four days of the war, an advance was made east ofthe Mouse, as may be seen on the map, in the direction of Mont-mody. It was planned to use the American Army in a greatadvance toward Longwy and the iron-fields of Briey, to befollowed by an offensive east of the Moselle, isolating Metz.Accordingly, says General Pershing, the attack was in progresson the morning of November 11, when instructions werereceived that hostilities should cease at 11 oclock. 16 The Literary Digest for February 22, 1919
