Summary

[edit]
Description The lintel atop the entrance gate to Baku's Icheri Shener old town quarter is actually quite symbolic. There is much meaning to the two lions flanking a flame in the centre and my guide told me quite a story about it, which I unfortunately do not seem to recall complete details of. The Icheri Shehar is actually the old walled City of Baku which also includes the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower. Another palace you see to the left immediately after you enter is in total shambles, destroyed by invading Soviet forces. It is widely accepted that the Old City, including its Maiden Tower, date at least to the 12th century, with some researchers contending that construction dates as far back as the 7th century. The question has not been completely settled. (Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017)
