lly popular, and thisplaque is a word for word translation of certainverses of the XXVIIth Psalm (XXVI. in the Vul-gate) into plastic form, v, 2. When the wicked,even my enemies and my foes, came upon me toeat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. (Thecrowd of warriors, some of whom have fallen).V. 5. For in the time of trouble he shall hideme in his pavilion : in the secret of his tabernaclehe shall hide me : he shall set me up upon a rock.(David is seen being welcomed into the Taber-nacle, which stands on a rock). Part of z\ 6. Therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrificesof joy (altar and lamb). V, 10. When myfather and mother forsake me then the Lord willtake me up (in the right corner a man and womanturn away from a child). The hand above istypical of the protection of God which is askedfor throughout the psalm. The slight and thin-ankled figures, and the continuous method ofnarration are characteristic of the miniatures,which originally derived their technique from late 108

(SCHWEIZERISCHER LAXDESMUSEU M, ZURICH 22. ILLUSTRATION OF PSALM XXVII Carlovingian, ninth century IVORY WORKERS Roman Art, and carried on the old system of anunbroken series of scenes which is to be found inthe bas-reliefs of Trajans Column. In the UtrechtPsalter (Anglo-Saxon) is an almost identical illus-tration of this psalm, which proves that this plaquewas copied from it or some analogous manuscript,as the Bodley Psalter (No. 603) in the BritishMuseum. These Psalters have furnished a modelfor another of these scenic psalms, carved on aplaque set in the magnificent binding of the Psalterof Charles the Bald, in the Bibliotheque nationaleat Paris. The manuscript was written between theyears 842-869, and there is no reason to thinkthat the jewelled and ivory cover is not con-temporary. One side gives a graphic picture ofthe LVIth Psalm, and the other represents Nathantelling David the story of the little ewe lamb(2 Sam. xii.). The Louvre possesses a plaque, alsoof the ninth century,
