Text Appearing Before Image:
ron, and Robespierre the younger were chosen to execute thevenfeance of the Convention on Toulon. Several thousand citizens of every ageand%ex perished in a few weeks by the sword or the guillotine ; two hundredwere daily beheaded for a considerable time ; and twelve thousand labourers werehired to demolish the buildings of the city. Among those who were struckdown in one of the fusillades was an old inan, who was severely but not mortallywounded. The executioners, conceiving him dead, retired from the scene ofcarnage ; and in the darkness of the night he had strength enough left to raisehimself from the ground and move from the spot. His foot struck against abodv, which gave a groan, and stooping down, he discovered that it was his ownson! After the first transports of joy were over, they crept along the ground, and favoured by the night, and the inebriety of the guards, they had the goodfortune to escai)e, and lived to recount a tale which might well have passed forfiction.—Alison.
