ear laughing to see a fool, with a basket full ofnew lamps on his arm, asking to exchange for old ones.Another woman slave who was present said, I know notwhether the princess has observed it, but there is an oldlamp upon the cornice; if the princess pleases, she maytry if this foolish man will give a new one for it. This was Aladdins wonderful lamp which he had placedupon the cornice before he set off on the hunting excur-sion ; but neither the princess, nor those who were abouther, had observed it. At all other times, but when hunt-ing, Aladdin carried it about him. The princess, whoknew not the value of the lamp, bade one of the slavestake it, and make the exchange. The slave went and called the magician; and showinghim the old lamp, said, Will you give me a new one inexchange ? The magician, knowing that this was the lamp hewanted, snatched it from the slave, and thrust it into hisbosom, bidding him take that which he liked best. Theslave chose one, and carried it to the princess.
