And when the lead was tornoff and cast down into the church and the tombs in thechurch all broken (for in most abbeys were divers noblemen and women—^yea, in some abbeys Kings whose tombswere regarded no more than the tombs of inferior per-sons) for to what end should they stand when the churchover them was not spared for their sakes? All things ofprice either spoiled, carried away, or defaced to the utter-most. The persons who cast the lead into fodders pluckedup all the seats in the choir, wherein the monks sat whenthey said service, which were like to the seats in minstersand burned them and melted the lead therewith, althoughthere was wood plenty within a flight shot of them. . . .In the rocks were found pewter
