They are, however, the first todepart again, leaving early in August; but the femalesand the yoixng remain somewhat longer. The Ruff has been famous from time immemorial forits combative propensities, and in Sweden, as elsewhere,these birds have certain arenas where the championssettle their quarrels. Their actions in fighting areverv similar to those of a game-cock : the head is lowered,and the beak held in a horizontal direction ; the ruff, andindeed every feather, more or less distended; the formersweej)ing the ground as a shield to defend the more tenderparts ; the auricles erected, and the tail partly spread,—upon the whole assuming a most ferocious aspect. Wheneither can obtain a fair hold with the bill, a leap succeeds,accompanied by a stroke of the wing,—but they rarelyinjure each other.

The meaning of thisterm I could never exactly understand; but as the wordkram implies a collection, or medley, of all sorts of things—so at least it is to be inferred from the huxter, orgeneral dealer, being called a hrani-handlare—and as thebirds in question are commonly brought to market,without distinction of species, in small knippor, orbunches of half a score or more, it seems to me notimprobable that hence has arisen their designation.
