nimals. I have, however, not killed many myself,having preferred to devote my attention to bigger beasts when seekingto provide meat for a large caravan while passing through its habitat.On one occasion, however, when we were in urgent need of food andno other game was procurable close by, I shot several single malesthat were scattered about, each by itself (as is the habit of the veryold rams), in the perfectly bare plains south of Naivasha, without anytrouble, by simply walking after them. GRANTS GAZELLE (Gazella grant2) Suara, SwAHlLl ; Ngoli, NoDOROBO ; Hidi, Galla (Plate x, figs. 2 and 3) With this large and handsome species we come to a group ofgazelles distinguished not only by their tall stature but likewise bythe circumstance that the white of the rump intrudes to a greater orless degree on to the fawn-coloured area of the sides of the back. Inthe present species the long and slender horns of the bucks aretypically distinctly lyrate in form and ridged nearly to their summit ;

Typically, at any rate,the hair of the neck and back has a peculiar wavy appearance, recallingthat of watered silk or silk-brocade. The shoulder-height rangesfrom about 32 to 34 inches; and the weight of bucks of the typicalrace from about 150 to 165 lb. The record horn-length is 30-^inches. This species has an extensive range in East Africa, and isrepresented by the following local races, of which the distribution isgiven by Mr. Oscar Neumann in the Sitznngs-BericJite Ges. Naturfor.Berlin for 1906,
