Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe former Trefor ROC observation post on Trwyn-y-Tal - geograph.org.uk - 627042.jpg |
English: The former Trefor ROC observation post on Trwyn-y-Tal From 1942 onwards, the Royal Observer Corps in Caernarfonshire, commanded from County HQ based in the Eagle's Tower of Caernarfon Castle, had a number of bases ringing the upland areas. These were designed not so much to detect enemy bombers, (which in 1940-41 followed a course which took them up the Irish Sea before turning right when they saw the lights of Dublin and proceeding east over N Wales towards the industrial areas of N England), but rather to guide returning damaged Allied bombers and aircraft lost in fog. Special radio transmitters were located at such posts to guide aircraft to the safety of a nearby airfield. One estimate put the number of aircraft guided by the ROC throughout the UK up to mid-1945 at 7000, with the possible total number of aircrew lives saved at 30,000. |
