| Description | A closer look at the fire at the Yanar Dag fire mountain. The flame is never extinguished as it is fueled by subterranean gas reserves. Around this open fireplace the atmosphere is filled with the smell of gas. The flames emanate from vents in sandstone formations and may at times rise to a height of 10 mtr. (they were fairly placid when I visited. At any rate, different figures are mentioned in other references) Yanar Dag is described by the Geological Survey of Azerbaijan like this: Intensive flames, to 1 mtr high, develop for 15 mtr along the base of a 2–4-mtr-high and 200-mtr tectonic scarp The surface flames result from the steady gas emissions from underlying soils and the temperature was quite intense. (Gobustan, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017) |
