onsequently theywelcomed a visit one Saturday morning from HarryBarton, a chum of theirs. Harry appeared unan-nounced and accompanied by his big, bow-legged Eng-lish bulldog, Mike. He went directly to the barn, fromwhich issued the voices of the Whipple boys and theirdogs, and entered Rome. The unexpected appearanceof Mike startled Jack, and he picked Remus hastilyup and held him in protecting arms. But Harry onlylaughed. What you fraid of? he inquired. Mikewouldnt hurt a kitten. He looks ugly and thats whatscares tramps away, but he never bit anything. Youought to see the baby walk all over him. Come on in, then, invited Ernest. Mike went slowly up to Romulus and sniffed at himnoisily. At first the puppy was frightened, but finding 56 THE DOGS OF BOYTOWN that he was not attacked he made one or two playfullittle lunges at the bulldog and then stood off andbarked shrilly at him, Remus joining in the chorus andstruggling to be set down. Theyve got spunk, all right, said Ernest, proudly.

English Bulldog Mike sniffed at Remus also, then yawned in a boredsort of way, waddled out of Rome as though hisyears and dignity forbade his association with suchfrivolous company, and thumped down on the flooroutside. All three boys laughed. Well, what do you think of em? Ernest askedpresently. Some dogs, eh ? IN ROME 57 Oh, theyll probly be all right when they growi:p/ said Harry, unwilling to concede too much, Theyll have to grow a lot, though, before theyknow as much as Mike. But a bulldog cant hunt like a setter, saidErnest, flying to the defense of his breed. Who wants to hunt ? demanded Harry. Hunt-ing isnt all a dogs for, is it ? A bulldogs a betterwatchdog than a setter. Ernest, not knowing whether this was so or not,made no reply. But arent they cunning, Harry? asked Jack. Oh, sure, theyre cunning, said Harry, satisfiedthat he had scored his point. Can they shake handsyet? Not yet, said Jack.
