ld scold her for soil-ing the couch. She really is careless. Then she stoodup, shook a finger at me—I do not think that fingerswere meant to be shaken—and said, warningly: Nowkeep very quiet, and dont get excited, and when mycompany goes home, ill undress you and put you tobed/ All alone on the couch, I had to watch her laughingand acting grown-up with Gladys and Maud, and Ijust couldnt keep from complaining, Why, oh whydoes she just choose me to have a cough? Im per-fectly healthy. I wonder if shell ever lock me up as she didTeddy Bear. Poor Teddy Bear! But I dont thinkthat he can be more miserable than I was then, and, worst of all, I felt myself getting dreadfully angry atmy mamma. All at once I heard a few cheep, cheeps outsideof the window. Now, who is that? I thought, verymuch excited; can that be Ted? Of course not; hisvoice would be deeper, and how could he get outside?I do hope that nobody will see me. Im so glad that thecushions hide me. Who knows what opinion people 36 4
Text Appearing After Image:
And I knew that the skin on the right side of my chin would be just ruined TUESDAY—A TEA PARTY AND ITS RESULTS would have of me, if they saw that merry crowd overthere, and me here, all alone? Cheep! cheep! went the sounds again, swellinginto a duet. Oh, it must be the sparrows that Maud was tellingme about, I thought. Well, isnt that lovely? Ill beable to hear every word, and Maud says that theirconversation is so interesting. I had forgotten all mytroubles, and was awfully excited. I certainly do likeexcitement. They havent been here since the Friday before Icame, and I was so afraid that Id never meet them!Oh! but I listened carefully. There she is! said a young voice (they weremother and son, Maud told me). Theres the dearlittle girl that warmed up our stomachs with her ownnice, hot buttered toast two weeks ago, when wewere making a very, very light and chilly breakfastof snow. She is a dear! answered an older voice; see howshes laughing, son! Im sure she never has a sulkymoment
