g. In the earlystage the size and consistency of the uterus are not changed. Inthe advanced stage, when the growth has extended to the serosa,small nodules may be palpated on the outer surface of the uterus,giving the impression of small subperitoneal fibroids. Exploration of the uterine cavity is essential to a positive diag-nosis. This is accomplished by the examining finger, the sound,or the curette. After dilating the cervix sufficiently to admit the index finger,the entire surface of the endometrium can be explored. Soft,friable, and irregular elevations upon the surface are located, andmay be scraped off by the finger for a microscopic examination.It is possible in the early stage for the growth that is not distinctlyraised above the surface to escape the examining finger. The uterine sound will detect the irregularities upon the surfaceof the endometrium with less certainty, and will afford much lessintelligent information regarding the consistency and extent of the PLATE XLIX.
