Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Climate change is severely affecting glaciers around the world. Venezuela, once home to six glaciers in the Sierra Nevada de Mérida, has witnessed the disappearance of these ice giants, with La Corona being the latest to succumb. This glacier, visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 14 February 2024, melted rapidly, shrinking to an extent of less than 2 hectares. Experts attribute its rapid decline to record-breaking temperatures fuelled by the recent El Niño event. Data from the Copernicus satellites, thanks to their high temporal resolution, allows us to monitor the state of the cryosphere around the world.
