Suddenly, the sun leaped over the horizonand the long crimson rays flashed forward to where,dead ahead, we could see a faint swelling on theskyline. Land-ho! we cried in voices of strangled joy. Boys, said Captain Triplett, apologetically. . . we aint got no yard-arm, but the suns upand theres land dead ahead, and I reckon . . . He paused. Through the hatchway cameWilliam Henry Thomas bearing a tray with fourlily cups. Fair as a lily . . . said Whinney (I knew hewould). Two minutes later we had fallen into heavyslumber while the Kawa steered by the faithfulTriplett, moved steadily toward our unknownhaven. Chapter II A real discovery. Polynesia analyzed. Captain Ezra Triplett Chapter II There is nothing better, after a hurricane, thansix hours sleep. It was high noon when we wereawakened by William Henry Thomas and the odorof coffee, which drew us to the quarter-deck.There, for the first time, we were able to make anaccurate survey of our surroundings and realizethe magnitude and importance of what had be-fallen us. While we slept Captain Triplett hadwarped the denuded Kawa through a labyrinthof coral and we now lay peacefully at anchor withthe island lying close in-board.
