[edit]DescriptionThe choir of Dunblane Cathedral (48065311653).jpg |
Dunblane is a town in what is known as the "Central belt" of Scotland and many residents commute to larger towns such as Stirling, or cities such as Glasgow or Edinburgh. This church was built upon a Christian site first established by Saint Blane around the year 600 and is one of the few surviving medieval churches in Scotland. The town of Dunblane was the scene of a tragedy on 13 March 1996 when 16 very young schoolchildren and a teacher were shot dead at the school by a deranged man. A school shooting in Britain was an unprecedented event and it caused nationwide grief. Almost all the children were aged 5. Tennis champion Andy Murray was a child at the school when the shooting occurred but was not directly involved. After an inquiry private ownership of most handguns in Britain were outlawed. Two days after the shooting, a vigil and prayer session was held at Dunblane Cathedral which was attended by people of all faiths. On Mothering Sunday, 17 March, Queen Elizabeth II and her daughter Anne, Princess Royal, attended a memorial service at the Cathedral. Seven months later the families of the victims organised their own memorial service in the Cathedral, which more than 600 people attended, including Prince Charles who represented the Royal Family. In the nave of the Cathedral is a standing stone by the monumental sculptor Richard Kindersley which commemorates the tragic event. |
