ome upon two banks, or natural mounds, wliich were formerly the Court-hill and GaUowshiU of the Clan, the former having been called Tom-na-mlioidand the latter Tom-na-croich. These were the spots where the chieftainsof the Clan Colqulioun tried culprits,—whether their enemies or vassals,—and executed the sentence of capital punishment. The father of the presentSir James Colqulioun of Luss remembered the identical tree on which theexecutions took place, but it was very much decayed, and was unfortunatelyremoverl. It was a Scotch fir, and stood witliin a few feet of the Scotch firthat is now on the top of the bank. A view of the GaUowshill is here given. It may here be noticed that there is preserved at Eossdliu a volume ofthe records of The Court of the lands and Barony of Luss, in folio, andof considerable thickness, but the minutes fill only about 1G3 pages. Thefirst minute is dated at Luss, 7th October 1G63, and the last at Arnburn,27th and 28th December 1792. Vol. xvii. p. 245.

Their badge is thebranch of the sauch-tree, which stOl floiuishes luxuriantly on that spot. Inthe Macgregors boat-song of Sir Walter Scotts Lady of the Lake thestrength of the ever-green pine, the badge of the Macgregors, is exultinglycontrasted with the more slender sauch of the Colquhouns :— Ours is no sapling, chance-sown by the fountain, Blooming at Beltane, in winter to fade ; When the whirlwind has strippd every leaf on the mountain, The more shall Clan-Alpine exult in her shade. Moord in the rifted rock, Proof to the tempests shock. Firmer he roots him the ruder it blows. The bard might also have contrasted the more wild and secluded placesof rendezvous for war of the Macfarlanes at Loch Sloy, and of the Buchananson the island of Clar Inch,
