Advertising Sketches. I wish I had time and space— particularly space— to tell you how much benefit a mans business can derive from a good Advertising Sketch. I could cite numerous instances. The cheapness of Photo-Engraving has largely increased the field of advertising sketches, and I now find myself busy in many directions that before I never dreamed of. Some of the queer things I have been asked to design lately have been: A seaside cottage with all the windows facing the ocean. Columns for newspapers so that every advertiser may appear simultaneously at top of column next to reading matter. Plans for the Worlds Fair in New -York. A BACKWARD SPRING. Cover for a magazine that wouldn't print continued stories. Advance postal cards for drummers on their maiden trip, saying they would arrive about the 20th, but who never arrived at all. And so on and so forth. In short, there is no department in business where a bright, brainy sketch — a sketch that tells its own story—cannot be utilized to
