This last, however, is only oneexample of how even the details of civil architecture were adoptedin Church building, and adapted to new uses. We pursue thisline of study, and find that the tower basement, and even thebattlements that formed its crown, were alike fruitful. Theypassed over, with the tower itself, to the service of the Church,where they became the germs of a new development in construc-tion and decoration alike. Let us begin with the basement. The essential point here liesin the vault separating this, the ground-floor of the tower, from thefirst and following storeys.
