It seems, therefore, that the pedunculated tumors may be congenital,may occur at the period of puberty, at the menopause, or at any other time, and thatthey may be of indefinite duration. The first appearance is that of a wart (Dreydorff, THE DISEASES OF THE NIPPLE AND AREOLA 679 Green, Lepage.), on or near the nipple, that grows slowly and indefinitely. The tumorsoccur in unmarried as well as in married women. In the cases reported by Pilz andSendler, the tumors grew larger during the menstrual periods. In the latter the tumorenlarged during pregnancy, as in Schmidts case, or AVith each succeeding pregnancy asin Greens case. The tumor seemed to involve the entire structure of the nipple in the cases reportedby Eberhardt and by Schmidt, who looked upon it as a form of hypertrophy of thenipple. In six cases the tumor is said to have grown from the tip of the nipple, in twocases from its side, in two cases from its base, and in five cases from the areola close to

Beginning with an appearance like a small wart the tumor enlarges and becomesnodular like a strawberry or more coarsely nodular like a pineapple. When very largeit becomes so very nodular and complicated as to resemble a cauliflower. The sizeattained is rarely great. Cliets patient, at puberty had a little tumor like a straw-berry hanging from the extremity of the left nipple; at 45 years—30 years later—it had 68o THE BREAST become the size of the fist.
