Warmuth, who amputated the right breast, cleared the axilla, andremoved the small glands from the right supra-clavicular region, and the polypus from the uterus.Microscopic examination by Dr. Henry S. Wieder showed distinct adeno-carcinoma. Within twoweeks after the operation, she had the excruciating pains of carcinoma, and within a month the entireoperative area was indurated and showed distinct recurrence in the wound, the axUla, and the supra-clavicular region, recognized by Dr. Warmuth and myself. At the same time, the tumor in the leftbreast increased to the size of a fist, and there were enlarged glands in the axUla. Very active dailytreatment was given to the. recurrence on the right side, until a slight dermatitis appeared, whentreatment was given to the left breast which was clearly inoperable, and each side wastreated in turn until all evidence of recurrence had disappeared from the right side, and until the left

For the two sides, she had in all 100 ap-plications of the rays. In nine months, no distinct evidence of the disease could be recognized. Shehad returned to her usual affairs of life, was taking gymnastic exercises, and was quite well. Duringthe early part of January, 1913, she bruised the left breast. The skin which had been damaged by therays became eroded and painful. I then referred her to Dr. Warmuth for excision of the breast. Theaxilla was not opened because we believed the rays had healed this glandular area. Pathological studiesby Dr. Eugene Case, confirmed by Dr. Joseph McFarland, showed no evidence of malignant diseaseanywhere, but showed pigmentation and necrosis of the skin and chronic diffuse fibrosis of the breast.Th
