ou, the most vividimpressions of detail are those of the conformation ofthe inner rim, the cliffs which rise above it, and thesmall volcano which emerges from the blue waters ofthe lake. The marvellous inner slope of the rim is not a con-tinuous cliff, but a highly diversified succession ofstrata. Examination shows the layers of volcanicconglomerate and lava of which, like layers of brickand stone, the great structure was built. The down-ward dip of these strata away from the lake is every-where discernible. The volcanos early story thus liesplain to eyes trained to read it. The most interestingof these strata is the lava flow which forms twelvethousand feet of the total precipice of Llao Rock, aprominence of conspicuous beauty. Many of these cliffs are magnificently bold. Theloftiest is Glacier Peak, which rises almost two thou-sand feet above the waters surface. But Dutton Cliffis a close rival, and Vidae Cliff, Garfield Peak, LlaoRock, and the Watchman fall close behind. Offsetting
