e had been summoned to answer for hisopinions, Luther declared he could not renounce opi-nions founded in reason, and derived from Scripture, andat the same time delivering a formal protest, the cardi-nal asked, What do you mean ? Do you rely on theforce of arms ? When the just punishment and thethunder of the popes indignation break in upon you,where do you think to remain ? His answer was, Either in heaven or under heaven. Luther was at length summoned to appear before thediet at Worms, to answer for his heresy. The empe-ror Charles V. having granted him a safe conduct, heyielded obedience and set out for Worms. While onhis journey, many of his friends (whom the fate ofHuss under similar circumstances, and notwithstandingthe same security of an imperial safe conduct, filledwith solicitude) advised and entreated him not to rushwantonly into the midst of danger. But Luther, supe-rior to such terrors, silenced them with this reply :—/am lawfully called said he, to appear in that city

MARTIN LUTHER. Luther, when brought before the Diet at Worms, was called onto recant his opinions. Unawed by the multitude, or thepower of his enemies, he firmly refused, declaring, unlessconvinced by clear reasons taken from the holy Scriptures, Ineither can or will recant. Here I stand !
