THE BLACK AND GOLD 21 this way several hundred candles could be made in a day.There were several different kinds of candle holders, whichwere made of wood, bronze, tin, and all kinds of metals.These candle holders suggested the lamps At first thelamp was made on the order of the candle. The lard wasput into a tin vessel, in the middle of which was a smallcylinder, a bit of cotton was put in the cylinder and thenlighted. A little later came the German vapor lamps. Inthe bottom of this lamp melted lard was poured; and thewick, which had previously been saturated with liquid, wasthen lighted, which heated liquid into vapor and thus keptthe lamp burning. Then came the kerosine lamp withprisms attached to it, and finally an electric light bulb whichwas used in Salem in 1881. The matches in early days weremade by dipping cedar matches into sulphur. The second fire-engine brought to America is in themuseum. This engine was used for years by the early in-habitants of Salem. It is a quaint woo
