live color. Theaxles of the under trucks were covered with large pro-tectors resembling, rather grotesquely, the shape of theAmerican eagle. The car was said to be ironclad, the armor platebeing set in between the inner and outer walls, render-ing it bullet-proof. This precaution, however, appears tohave been of little consequence unless the window glasswas also bullet-proof. Some of the men assisting inthe construction of the coach in their reminiscencesstated that no armor was used in its construction.Nevertheless, the car was of such great weight that itsbuilders thought it necessary to mount it on four, four-wheeled trucks. The trucks were equipped with broad tread wheelsto enable the car to run over nearly all gauge railroadsin the United States. The large observation platform andthe system of heating was new to the cars of thatperiod and it marked a distinct advance in railwayconstruction.
