as the ruins of Bayham Abbey aregenerally known to those who frequent TunbridgeWells, it is necessary to premise that the situationproposed for a new house is very different from thatof the abbey. No place concerning which I have had the honourto be consulted possesses greater variety of water, withsuch difference of character as seldom occurs withinthe limits of the same estate. The water near theabbey, now intersecting the meadow in various chan-nels, should be brought together into one river, wind-ing through the valley in a natural course : this maybe so managed as to drain the land while it improvesthe scenery ; and I suppose the whole of this valleyto be a more highly dressed lawn, fed by sheep andcattle, but without deer. Above this natural division the water will assumea bolder character ; that of a lake or a broad river, fillingthe entire bottom of the valley, between two woodedshores, and dashing the foot of that steep bank onwhich the mansion is proposed to be erected.
