BLACK MOUNTAIN. 21 this bridge the view of the river is exceedinglyfine, as will be seen by the annexed engraving;although all the remnant of the M^aterfall is theplunging of the stream over a low ledge ofrocks. The town itself has a good deal ofcharacter. It is decidedly a Welsh town ; andnotwithstanding the commingling that musthave taken place in the races, it possesses thatforeign aspect which is so exciting to the curi-osity. This appearance, however, is still more evi-dent in the next place at which we arrive,Builth ; but the traveller must not be in a hurryto get there. The valley of the Wye, duringthe fourteen miles which intervene, presents acontinuous series of picturesque views, sufficientof themselves to make the reputation of theriver. The stream rushes the whole waythrough a singularly rocky and winding bed,bound in by lofty and fantastic banks, and theseby hills, naked or wooded, barren or fertile, ofevery variety of form.
