The later fifteenthcentury alterations were considerable, and consisted principally inwidening the hospital—or western portion—and adding thereto anupper floor entered by a twisted staircase in the south-west angle,whilst the priests chamber was also raised by the addition of aroom above; the west porch was also added, and some windowsinserted in the chapel, with new roofs throughout. With one ortwo slight alterations the building remains as at that time, althoughit has passed through many changes—first it was used as a dwelling-house, when the Queen Anne fireplace on the upper floor and thetwo windows of the same date on each side the building wereinserted ; afterwards it became a bakery, evidence of which, in theshape of a large stone oven at the east end remained till the laterestoration; but it ceased to be used for any other purpose than alumber shed many years ago. By Harold Brakspear, A.B.I.B.A. 333 ormed of three canopied niches. The centre one has a curions.rojecting semi-circular back, behind which and within the buttresshat runs up the centre of the gable outside is a large circularlue, up which a lantern was hoisted on dark nights to guidewayfarers, which must have been visible at a great distance. Indther side wall is a small two-light window with ogee-head, of the>riginal work. Two stone arches springing from semi-octagonaliorbels in the side walls originally carried a stone slab roof, whichvas removed, as well as the upper part of the arches, when themilding was raised ; but the lowest and projecting course of slabsitill shows on the outside of the chapel and priests chamber as well,;o that probably the whole of the original roofs were constructed inids way.
