The Wendover Arm at Drayton Beauchamp

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Wendover Arm at Drayton Beauchamp The Wendover Arm is 6.7 (10.8 km) miles long. Opened in 1797, its purpose was to feed water into the Grand Union Canal at its summit in the Chiltern Hills. However, the Arm passes through unstable ground and was often subject to heavy leakage requiring repair. By 1897, it was losing more water than it supplied, and the section beyond Tringford was closed. The Arm is now being reconstructed by the Wendover Arm Trust, the first phase being reopened in 2005.

This view is of a restored (but currently isolated) section of Arm at Drayton Beauchamp looking towards Halton - the canal's tow-path provides a pleasant walk from the Grand Union Canal at Bulbourne, past Tring (Gamnel Wharf) and on to Wendover.
