rthwest column, struck the floor plates inrear of the elevator, and exploded; thence into the engine-room on the pipes orwires, where the only damage done was the burning out of the magneto coil of thetelephone, which broke the connection between the engine-room and the boiler-house. It is a coincidence that each time the Monument has been struck by light-ning the fluid has left the columns about the same place. On the afternoon ofMay 3, 1900, a man who was standing on the lower floor of the Monument andleaning against one of the iron columns which support the stairways receivedquite a heavy shock of electricity in his arm and shoulder, and two men who werelooking out of one of the windows at the top at the same time reported that theflash seemed to come in the window over their heads. They were blinded for amoment. No damage was done. The iron columns referred to act as lightningconductors, the lightning rods on the outside of the pyramidion being connectedwith them for that purpose.
