Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Troxy Cinema, Commercial Road - geograph.org.uk - 172476.jpg |
English: The Troxy Cinema, Commercial Road. Opened in 1933, the Troxy seated over 3,500 people. The external appearance does not to justice to this 'Art Deco' gem. Inside the auditorium has been marvelously restored to its original exuberant glory and is wonderfully atmospheric. The Troxy's own website provides a virtual tour that gives a good impression of the effect [1].
Plans are well underway (in 2012) to install a huge Wurlitzer organ rescued from the Troxy's sister cinema the Trocadero at the Elephant and Castle. See Trocadero Wurlitzer trust [2] It was formerly a venue for top artists like the Andrews Sisters, Gracie Fields, Petula Clark and even Clark Gable. The first film shown was King Kong. The last, in 1960, was The Siege of Sydney Street. Like most cinemas of that age, it became a Bingo Hall, but has been restored as a multipurpose venue within the original space. |
