Description

The Sword of State looks like an impressive piece of hardware but I cannot ever remember seeing it being used? Perhaps it is one of those items that just passes by ahead of or behind the dignitaries on state occasions?

Based on today's informative contributions (including more recent captures of a display of Dublin's civic regalia), this was almost certainly the longsword (1.4m) presented to Dublin Corporation by Henry IV in the 15th century. The scabbard was apparently a later addition. The sword is seemingly still used on civic occasions - like the conferring of the freedom of the city...
