Although the section of therail is generally the same as that of several grooved girderrails which have been used in various cities in this coun-try, it differs essentially in several important features.After making a long series of studies of the effect of wearon previous rails of this type, considerable metal was addedto the outside of the head just above the top of the web,as these studies indicated that an increase in section at thatpoint would add materially to the serviceable life of therail. The thickness of the metal directly under the groovehas also been increased for the same reason. The outeredge of the rail is beveled and the pavement is finished %.in. below the top of the rail on that side. The head of therail can thus be worn down until the flange of the carwheels ride on the groove before the treads of the carwheels reach the pavement. Two other conditions also had to be met in designingthe grooved portion of the head of the rail, first, a groovewhich would prevent the wheels of vehicles entering it, andsecond, a groove which would be self-cleaning was desired.As both of these conditions cannot be perfectly fulfilled bythe same groove, a compromise has been made betweenthem in this case.
