These lattermains, which are 7 ins. in diameter, pass upward through theadjacent wall and into a separator immediately over the throt-tle valve of the engine. With the exception of the condenserpumps, which obtain their steam direct from the engine mains,all of the steam auxiliaries are connected to a 4-in. auxiliarysteam header located directly above the main steam header,which in turn is connected to both sections of the mainheader. The probability of future extension of the station deter-mined to a great extent the arrangement of the apparatus inthe engine room. The generating units were of courseplaced as close to the boilers as possible, and the switchesand transformers for each unit were located opposite the gen-erating units to maintain the unit system followed from theboilers to the high-tension buses in the construction of thestation. The exciters, the sub-station apparatus and theswitchboard, however, were located near one end of the build-ing in such a position that when the contemplated future ex-tension is made to this end of the building they will be cen-trally located.
