. Fig. 1 also shows the extensive hydraulic development thatthe company has planned in connection with its power sys-tem. In the heart of the mountains, at an altitude of 1600ft., lies the Chittenden Reservoir, with a drainage area of15 sq. miles, and an area of about 800 acres. The storagecapacity of this reservoir is 135,000,000 cu. ft. of water. Fivemiles southwest of the Chittenden reservoir another storage,of 63,000,000 cu. ft. has been created in a 320-acre reservoirknown as the East Pittsford, which has a drainage area of9 sq. miles. About a mile and a half south of the lowerend of the East Pittsford reservoir a power house has beenerected as shown in Fig. 2, at Mendon, and a steel penstockconnects the lower reservoir with this plant. As yet, poweris developed only at the Mendon end of the water course,but in the future it will be a simple matter to establish a sec-ond plant between the two reservoirs. The available headbetween the upper reservoir and the power house is 697 ft,

the suburban service is taken by a through line running 16miles westward to Fairhaven. At Castleton Corners a branchline runs to Lake Bomoseen, one of the most beautiful sheetsof water in the Green Mountain district. A heavy parktraffic is handled between Rutland, Fairhaven and the lakein the summer season, the fare between Rutland and LakeBomoseen being 25 cents in each direction. The North andSouth Belt lines enable the visitor to obtain an excellentidea of the city for a single 5-cent fare, transfers being givenfreelv from one line to the other. Each loop contains about3 miles of track, and the running time is twenty minutes,with a twenty-minute interval between cars. On the SouthBelt the car passes in full view of Mt. Killington, which hasan altitude of about 4000 ft. In the future an extension ofabout 8 miles to Whitehall is planned, as shown on the map.The company owns twenty-six cars at present, of which fif-teen are of the open type.
