WAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXL No. 19. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NEAL DUPLEX BRAKE This brake has been modified somewhat since it was firstdescribed in these columns and has been adopted on a number ofroads, where it is giving very good results, especially in thedirection of efficiency. As the action of the brake depends onthe friction of the wheel and the rail, the brake-shoe frictionmust necessarily be slightly lower than that between the wheeland the rail, so that the ideal conditions of efficient braking are Company, Union Traction Company of Indiana, St. LouisTransit Company, Boston Elevated Railway Company, Colum-bus (Ohio) Street Railway Company and the Scranton StreetRailway Company. So far the brake has been adopted principally for city service,to which the comparatively slow speed of the cars, its low firstcost and the low cost of maintenance make it particularlyadapted. DUPLEX BRAKE FOR DOUBLE-TRUCK CAR automatically supplied. That this theoretical condition is fol-lowed in practice is shown by the fact that the number of skidflat wheels reported under the cars equipped with this brake areremarkably low. The present form of Neal duplex brake, as installed on adouble-truck car, is illustrated in the plan view presented here-with. No air is used in brake operation, and the usual com-pressor is replaced by a pump of ordinary construction. Thispump is operated by an eccentric driven from the axle andforces oil, when the brake is not in use, through a piece offlexible hose into a cylinder located in the center of the car,from which the oil is returned to the pump through a secondpiece of hose. The cylinder contains two pistons which areconnected directly to the regular brake levers, and a movementof the brake handle closes a valve in the outlet pipe of the brakecylinder. The instant the valve is closed the oil coming fromthe pump forces out the brake pist
