The mainconsideration with steel rails for ordinary use is to obtain and the wear amounts to practically nothing. Manganeseappears to be the element most affecting the conductivity, carbon being next. The resistance of an ordinary trackrail high in carbon and manganese willoften be found to be twelve or thirteentimes that of copper for the same section. The following composition for a thirdrail is suggested as not being difficult toobtain commercially, while providing areasonably high conductivity: Per cent Carbon, not to exceed 12 Manganese, not to exceed. . . 15Phosphorus, not to exceed. ... 10Sulphur, not to exceed 05 The electrical conductivity of a thirdrail of this composition will be about 60per cent higher than that of an ordinaryrunning rail of the same cross section; thatis, a third rail of this special compositionwould weigh only 63 per
