Compressed-air cars are being rapidly replaced by elec-tric equipments. Electric accumulator cars are generallyequipped with rapid-charging batteries. The charging isaccomplished at the terminal stations after each trip andrequires from nine minutes to twelve minutes. In order toavoid the objectionable odors penetrating the interior ofthe cars, and to prevent the spilling of the acid on the carfloors, experiments are being made with the view of en-tirely enclosing the batteries while in service. Along thesides of the car glass windows have been placed in front ofthe battery compartment, and the batteries may thus beobserved at any time.
