Ordi-narily steam pipes are run undergroundin wooden logs. Even if these arelined with tin, they will char and rot,are difficult to replace and the leakagewill wet the insulating covering onthe steam pipe, thus impairing itsefficiency. In running undergroundsteam mains the pipe covering shouldbe depended upon for insulation, andthe use of the outside casing shouldsimply be to exclude water and toafford mechanical protection. Asshown, the steam pipe is here insulatedby asbestos fire felt covering. It isthen laid in special halved drain tileand kept centered by three prongedcast iron chairs which allow an air spaceof an inch between covered steam pipe
