Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Sermeq Kujalleq glacier in Greenland (Copernicus 2024-01-24).jpg |
English: The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, is a prominent glacier located in western Greenland. Renowned for its dramatic ice flow and calving events, it is one of the fastest-moving glaciers in the world. It extends from the Greenland Ice Sheet to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sermeq Kujalleq has attracted global attention because of its rapid retreat and increasing ice loss, which contributes to sea level rise and affects ocean circulation and the distribution of heat energy around the globe. Scientists are closely monitoring the dynamics of Greenland's glaciers as a key indicator of the impact of climate change on polar ice. The glacier can be seen in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 1 October 2023. The Copernicus Sentinel satellites play a crucial role in the monitoring of glaciers worldwide, providing essential information which helps researchers and decision-makers develop effective strategies for addressing the challenges stemming from climate change. |
